Best Broadband Internet in Pakistan: PTCL, Wateen, Witribe, Qubee By: Muhamamd Raza Date: 10 April 2013
Many people want to know that which broadband internet is best in Pakistan
. Naming any specific broadband ISP as best would not be justified. In simple words, any company is not bad everywhere and any company is not good everywhere. All depends on the quality of broadband service of different companies in the area where you are living.
Broadband is referred for all technologies which are capable of providing higher data rates by using a wider range of frequency bandwidth as compared to dial up connection which can provide max data rate of 56Kbps.
Quality of any services company compromises of two aspects, one is level of customer care & other is quality of product. As per customer care aspect, private companies are giving better service as compared to PTCL. PTCL has also been privatized but it still has same government style of operation and customer care. PTCL is striving to improve its customer care segment, and has shown a lot of progress. Especially in major cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, customer care standards of PTCL have improved a lot.
Quality of product for a broadband internet service depends on the infrastructure of the company. It is not possible for a layman to assess the complete infrastructure of any company. However by checking below mentioned major indicators of the connection, backend product quality can be verified.
Speed is the most important aspect of any broadband internet connection. If someone pays for a package of 1Mbps= 1024Kbps, but gets a speed below 256 Kbps then it’s very bad service. Anything above 512Kbps is ok and above 750 Kbps is good. Obviously if someone gets complete 1Mbps for one 1Mbps connection package then it’s perfect, but it’s very rare as consumer level BWs are shared. Dedicated BW packages are for corporate customers and they are 10-15 times more costly. Similarly one can check speeds for higher BW packages like 2Mbps, 4Mbps, 8Mbps etc. Below are some sites to check speed of an internet connection:
PTCL speed test
wateen speed test
Only speed is not everything to check for a broadband connection. Sometimes companies sell a lot of bandwidth e.g. 1000Mbps=1Gbps in a area but at backend they only have BW of few Mbps e.g 40-50 Mbps. When simultaneously many customers like 400-500 uses internet, the bandwidth gets choked at backend. In result, connections of clients become very slow in that area. Try to get a test connection before purchasing and check speed in peak internet traffic hours like 8-10 PM or Saturday nights etc. Very long congestion times show company end BW issues.
In some areas companies have infrastructure maintenance issues like power unavailability, problematic hardware, manpower shortage etc. It is better to ask about downtime issues from customers of the same area not from some other area or city. If a downtime occurs once after two or three months it is ok but if service remains down for sometime after every few days then there is some service issue.
Speed is not the only marker for all web applications. Applications for voice and video streaming need good latency rates. Latency is basically the time it takes for a data packet to go and come back from the web server. Simplest method to check latency is to ping any international server like google.com.pk, from CMD prompt terminal. The delay should not be greater than 400Ms and loss should not be greater than 1%. Any ping test website can also be used.
